PCI DSS compliance requirements for computers (endpoints, workstations, and servers)

Sterling International Consulting helps Philippine merchants, BPOs and service providers bring computers, endpoints and workstations up to PCI DSS requirements — secure configuration, access control, patching, logging and monitoring — with gap analysis, remediation support and preparation for assessment or SAQ validation. Named local consultants in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao support your team end to end.

Protecting cardholder data is critical for maintaining trust and compliance with industry standards. At Sterling International Consulting, we ensure that your company’s computers and IT infrastructure meet PCI DSS compliance requirements to safeguard sensitive payment information. From secure network configurations to endpoint security and access controls, our solutions help businesses mitigate risks, prevent data breaches, and achieve full compliance with PCI DSS standards. Below are the key security requirements for company computers handling cardholder data.

For PCI DSS compliance, computers (endpoints, workstations, and servers) in the company must meet the following key requirements:

1. Secure Network Configuration & Firewalls

  • Install and maintain a firewall to protect cardholder data.
  • Configure host-based firewalls or equivalent security controls on all computers.
  • Restrict inbound and outbound traffic to only necessary services.

2. Strong Access Control Measures

  • Implement unique user IDs for every individual with access.
  • Enforce strong password policies (minimum length, complexity, expiration).
  • Restrict administrator privileges to only authorized personnel.
  • Implement multi-factor authentication (MFA) for remote and privileged access.
  • Lock workstations automatically after a defined period of inactivity.

3. Data Protection & Encryption

  • Do not store sensitive authentication data after authorization (e.g., CVV, track data).
  • Encrypt cardholder data stored on computers if required.
  • Use TLS 1.2 or higher for secure data transmission over networks.
  • Implement disk encryption for laptops or portable devices that handle cardholder data.

4. Malware Protection & Endpoint Security

  • Install and regularly update anti-virus/malware protection on all computers.
  • Enable automatic security updates for operating systems and security software.
  • Restrict the ability to disable or alter security controls.

5. Secure Applications & Software

  • Use only approved and supported operating systems with security patches.
  • Disable or remove unnecessary services, applications, and user accounts.
  • Ensure software applications follow secure coding best practices.
  • Conduct regular vulnerability scans and patch critical vulnerabilities immediately.

6. Logging & Monitoring

  • Enable logging and audit trails for user activities.
  • Store logs securely for at least one year, with at least three months readily available.
  • Regularly review security logs and alerts to detect anomalies.

7. Physical Security Controls

  • Restrict physical access to workstations and servers that handle cardholder data.
  • Ensure computers auto-lock or require login after a period of inactivity.
  • Implement access control policies for employee workstations.

8. Remote Access Security

  • Restrict and monitor remote access to systems handling cardholder data.
  • Use secure VPNs with strong authentication for remote connections.
  • Disable split tunneling for remote access sessions.
  • Log and review remote access sessions regularly.

9. Employee Awareness & Training

  • Conduct regular security awareness training on PCI DSS and phishing threats.
  • Enforce acceptable use policies for handling cardholder data on computers.

There is no PCI DSS certificate

PCI DSS compliance is not certified. The PCI Security Standards Council qualifies assessors; it does not certify the entities they assess, and it does not enforce compliance — the payment brands and your acquiring bank do. What exists is an Attestation of Compliance (AOC), supported by either a Report on Compliance from a Qualified Security Assessor or a Self-Assessment Questionnaire. Ask for the AOC itself, check it names PCI DSS v4.0.1 and states the exact scope, and confirm the QSA on the Council’s own assessor list at pcisecuritystandards.org. Anything handed over as a “PCI DSS certificate” is the vendor’s own document, and it will not be on IAF CertSearch. How to check any certificate a supplier shows you →
