ISO certification in General Santos
Gap assessment, documentation update, training, internal audit and support through your transition audit, delivered end to end by our expert, experienced, professional and friendly local Filipino lead auditors.
General Santos is the Tuna Capital of the Philippines, and the label is commercial rather than ceremonial: seven tuna processing plants, a fleet with a daily capacity of about 750 tonnes and roughly 7,800 fishing-industry workers depend on the fish port complex at Barangay Tambler and on Makar Wharf. Canned, frozen and sashimi-grade tuna leaves for buyers who send food-safety auditors before purchase orders, so the certificates that matter are HACCP, ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000, with BRCGS and halal added when a European retailer or a Middle Eastern importer is involved. Around the tuna sit pineapple, corn and asparagus growers, feed mills, cold stores, can and carton suppliers, a PEZA-registered IT park, 19 hospitals and several universities, each with its own reason to hold a certificate.
Sterling’s Philippine operation dates from 2009, and General Santos, Sarangani and South Cotabato are served from the Davao office at 1103 Ayala Business Center, Talomo, Davao City 8000, about two and a quarter hours up the highway. Local Filipino lead auditors do the implementation and the internal audit; the certificate comes from an accredited body chosen by the client, not from Sterling.
Tuna first: what the canneries and the fish port are asked for
A cannery’s food-safety system is judged by its customers, the certification body and the fisheries authorities at once. HACCP is the hazard plan every buyer expects; ISO 22000 turns it into a managed system with prerequisite programmes, traceability and recall testing; FSSC 22000 adds the scheme requirements global retailers and brand owners recognise; BRCGS is the request from United Kingdom and European retailers. Cold stores and reefer carriers on the quay are asked for HACCP and increasingly for ISO 28000 supply-chain security. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources runs the quarantine, inspection and certification services and the National Fisheries Laboratory Division, so Sterling designs the records to satisfy inspector and auditor alike. See the seafood processing page and the ISO 22000 for food exporters guide.

Getting to General Santos from Davao
There is no Davao–General Santos flight, so the team drives: about 141 kilometres, two and a quarter hours by car or three and a quarter by bus. General Santos is therefore a same-day site, and cannery projects run as a sequence of plant visits for hazard analysis, prerequisite-programme checks, training and the internal audit, with drafting and corrective-action review done remotely between them. Design™ suits a cannery with an experienced QA head who wants coaching and templates; Drive™ suits a cold store or feed mill without one, Sterling’s team writing and training while the owner approves; both sit inside Sterling OS™, with Sustain™ for the surveillance years. Internal auditor and lead auditor courses of five days (40 hours) run in-house at the plant or publicly in Davao; see the training courses page.
SOCCSKSARGEN clients are served through the Davao office, led by Ann Reyes, Lead Auditor, Lead Implementer and Trainer: landline +63 2 7624 7648 or mobile +63 977 815 1204, and email info@iso-certification.ph.

What the auditor checks in a cannery, a cold store or a feed mill
Certification bodies with UKAS, JAS-ANZ, ANAB, DAkkS or Philippine Accreditation Bureau accreditation reach General Santos on the Manila flight; the nearest SGS Philippines office on its published directory is in Davao. Sterling works with any accredited body and sells no certificates. In a cannery the auditor walks against the flow, from finished goods back through retorting, seaming, cooking, cleaning and receiving, asking for thermal-process records, seam checks, metal detection logs, histamine controls and a traceability exercise for one lot. In a cold store the questions are temperature mapping, door-open times and calibration. A Sterling pre-assessment audit rehearses the walk a few weeks earlier.
City procurement and DPWH categories
The city government runs a procurement portal listing ongoing competitive bids and a transparency page for bids and awards, so suppliers can check what City Hall tenders before investing in ISO 9001; the government agencies guide explains the quality programme on the agency side. Contractors on the region’s DPWH projects fall under Department Order No. 110, series of 2024: ISO 9001 became mandatory for Large “A” firms at the start of 2025, for Medium “B” in July 2025 and for Medium “A” on 1 January 2026, with Large “B” required since 2011; the DPWH contractors guide sets out the scope wording bidding committees accept.
ISO 9001:2026 and ISO 14001:2026 in the tuna city
The ISO 9001:2026 standard was published on 16 September 2026 as the sixth edition; a certificate to the 2015 edition must be transitioned before 30 September 2029. ISO 14001:2026 runs on a different clock: published 15 April 2026, transition closing 30 April 2029. Clause changes are set out on the ISO 9001:2026 transition hub and, for the environmental edition, the ISO 14001:2026 transition hub with a free ISO 14001:2026 gap check. For a cannery on the General Santos waterfront, climate-related risk has a concrete meaning: fish landings, effluent limits and cold-chain energy move with sea temperature and typhoon seasons, and the context analysis must say so with data; the planning of changes worked example shows how a line expansion is handled under the new edition.
Budget and timeline drivers
Sterling gives no prices on this page. A quotation depends on how many standards are audited in one visit, how many employees and shifts the plant runs, how many sites and cold stores are in scope, whether a working HACCP plan exists to build on, and the audit days the body assigns; the certification cost page explains each, the transition cost page covers the ISO 9001:2026 move, and the ISO gap-analysis tool shows where a plant stands.

Frequently asked questions about ISO certification in General Santos
Our cannery already holds HACCP; is ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000 the next step? That depends on who is buying. ISO 22000 satisfies most Asian importers and adds management-system discipline to the hazard plan; FSSC 22000 is the scheme many global retailers and brand owners list as acceptable. Sterling extends the existing HACCP plan rather than replacing it.
How long is the drive from Sterling’s Davao office to General Santos? About two and a quarter hours by car over roughly 141 kilometres, or three and a quarter by bus; there is no direct flight. Consultants come for full plant days and handle document review remotely in between, so a cannery does not pay for travel on days without site work.
Does a cold store at the Tambler fish port need ISO 22000? Many customers accept HACCP for storage and handling, but exporters shipping through the cold store increasingly ask for ISO 22000 so their own FSSC 22000 or BRCGS audits do not stall at supplier approval. ISO 28000 is added when a buyer’s security programme requires it.
Which certification bodies audit in General Santos? Accredited bodies fly auditors in from Metro Manila, and SGS Philippines’ nearest listed office is in Davao. Sterling has no tie to any body, prepares the plant for the one the client or its customer prefers, and agrees in advance which audit parts can be remote.
Do Polomolok pineapple and asparagus growers need GLOBALG.A.P. or ISO 22000? Fresh produce for export is usually asked for GLOBALG.A.P. at farm level, while processed fruit, juice and canned products need HACCP and ISO 22000 at the plant. A grower-processor often holds both, and Sterling aligns them so farm records feed the plant’s traceability.
We supply the city government and DPWH; which certificate matters? For city tenders, ISO 9001 supports the technical and post-qualification requirements in bidding documents; for DPWH civil works it is compulsory by contractor category under Department Order No. 110, series of 2024. Sterling scopes the system to the licence category and the work bid.
