We build the traceability, configuration control and risk records the primes expect, practical enough for the shop floor. Named local consultants in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao.
AS9100 is the quality management standard that governs the aerospace industry, and for any company that wants to supply parts, assemblies or services into aerospace and defense supply chains, it is not a differentiator but a prerequisite. The primes and original equipment manufacturers that build the world’s aircraft and defense systems require their suppliers to hold AS9100 certification before they will place them on an approved-vendor list. For Philippine aerospace manufacturers, precision-component producers, and aviation maintenance providers seeking to participate in the country’s growing aerospace sector and in global supply chains, AS9100 certification is the entry ticket to the industry’s most valuable work.
Sterling International Consulting provides expert AS9100 implementation and certification consulting across Manila, Cebu and the wider Philippines. What is AS9100?
AS9100 is the internationally recognised Quality Management System standard for the Aviation, Space and Defense (AS&D) industries. It is built on the foundation of ISO 9001 — incorporating all of its requirements — and extends it with additional requirements specific to the aerospace sector, where product quality is directly linked to flight safety and where traceability, defect prevention and configuration control are essential. The standard is maintained by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) and is published under equivalent designations around the world, ensuring a single, globally consistent quality benchmark for aerospace suppliers.
The current revision, widely referred to as AS9100 Rev D, aligns with the modern high-level structure of ISO management-system standards and places strong emphasis on risk-based thinking, product safety and the prevention of counterfeit parts. AS9100 sits within a family of aerospace standards: AS9100 itself applies to organisations that design and manufacture aerospace products, AS9110 applies to aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul organisations, and AS9120 applies to distributors of aerospace parts. Certification is issued by accredited certification bodies and recorded in the industry’s shared database, making a supplier’s certified status visible to the primes and OEMs who rely on it.
AS9100 has evolved over more than two decades as the aerospace industry has worked to harmonise quality expectations across a global supply base. Before its adoption, suppliers faced a patchwork of differing customer quality requirements; the standard brought these together into a single, industry-agreed framework, dramatically reducing duplication and giving suppliers one benchmark to meet rather than many. Today it is recognised by aerospace customers worldwide, and certification to it is a common contractual requirement flowed down through the supply chain. This universality is central to its value: a Philippine supplier certified to AS9100 speaks the same quality language as its counterparts anywhere in the world, removing a major barrier to entering international aerospace programmes and winning the confidence of global customers.
Who needs AS9100 certification?
AS9100 is relevant to any organisation in the aerospace and defense supply chain, including:
- Aerospace component and precision manufacturers producing parts, assemblies and aerostructures for aircraft and defense systems.
- Aerospace and defense suppliers seeking to join or remain on the approved-vendor lists of primes and OEMs.
- Machining, fabrication and special-process providers supplying into aerospace supply chains.
- Aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) organisations, which typically work to the related AS9110 standard.
- Distributors and stockists of aerospace parts, which work to the related AS9120 standard.
In practice, the requirement is cascaded down the supply chain: a prime requires AS9100 of its tier-one suppliers, who in turn require it of their own suppliers. A Philippine company that cannot demonstrate AS9100 certification is effectively excluded from this supply chain, regardless of its technical capability.
What AS9100 requires beyond ISO 9001
Because AS9100 contains the full text of ISO 9001, an organisation implementing AS9100 builds a complete quality management system and then adds the aerospace-specific requirements the sector demands. Key additions and areas of emphasis include:
| Area | What AS9100 adds |
| Product safety | Explicit requirements to plan, implement and control processes that ensure product safety throughout the product life cycle. |
| Counterfeit-parts prevention | Requirements to prevent the use of counterfeit or suspect unapproved parts, a critical concern in aerospace supply. |
| Configuration management | Disciplined control of product configuration and changes, ensuring traceability and consistency. |
| Risk management | Operational risk management applied to the realisation of aerospace products, beyond the general risk-based thinking of ISO 9001. |
| First article inspection | Formal verification that a production process reliably produces conforming parts. |
| Key characteristics & special processes | Identification and control of key characteristics and rigorous control of special processes such as heat treatment, welding and plating. |
| On-time delivery & awareness | Emphasis on delivery performance and on personnel awareness of their contribution to product safety, quality and ethical conduct. |
These additions reflect the reality that in aerospace, a non-conforming part or an undocumented process can compromise flight safety, so the standard demands a level of traceability, defect prevention and control found in few other industries.
AS9100 and the Philippine aerospace sector
The Philippines has built a meaningful presence in global aerospace value chains, from aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul operations serving international carriers to precision-component and aerostructure manufacturing based in the country’s economic zones. As this sector grows, and as the government pursues aerospace and defense industrial development, AS9100 has become the defining credential for local suppliers seeking to participate. International primes and OEMs do not relax their requirements for a Philippine supplier; they expect the same aerospace quality standard they demand anywhere in the world. Achieving AS9100 certification is therefore both a gateway to international programmes and a signal that a business operates at genuine world-class quality. It positions a supplier to win work from the tier-one and tier-two manufacturers increasingly sourcing precision work from the region, and to build the long-term, trusted relationships on which aerospace supply depends. For many Philippine aerospace businesses, it is the single most important quality credential they can hold.
Benefits of AS9100 certification
- Access to aerospace supply chains. AS9100 is the prerequisite to join the approved-supplier lists of primes and OEMs — without it, those opportunities are closed.
- Global recognition. Certification signals to aerospace customers worldwide that a supplier operates to the industry’s uniform quality benchmark.
- Reduced non-conformance and rework. The defect-prevention, traceability and configuration-control discipline reduces costly errors in flight-critical work.
- Stronger risk and safety management. Explicit product-safety and risk requirements protect both the product and the business.
- Competitive advantage. Certification distinguishes a serious, capable aerospace supplier in a demanding, high-barrier industry.
- A foundation for growth. A robust aerospace quality system supports expansion into new customers, programmes and markets.
- A stronger safety and ethics culture. The standard’s product-safety, counterfeit-prevention and awareness requirements embed safety and ethical thinking across the whole organisation, reinforcing the responsible conduct aerospace customers increasingly expect of their suppliers.

AS9100 certificates are on OASIS, not IAF CertSearch
AS9100 — published by SAE, and equivalent to EN 9100 in Europe and JIS Q 9100 in Japan — is a real certification, but aerospace keeps its own register. Certificates issued by IAQG-recognised certification bodies are recorded in OASIS, the Online Aerospace Supplier Information System at oasis.iaqg.org, and that is where a customer confirms them; a free account is needed to search it. They are not published on IAF CertSearch. Check the certificate is current, that its scope matches the work you are placing, and that the certification body is IAQG-recognised. Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between AS9100 and ISO 9001?
AS9100 contains the full text of ISO 9001 and adds aerospace-specific requirements — product safety, counterfeit-parts prevention, configuration management, first article inspection, control of special processes and more. ISO 9001 is a general quality standard for any industry; AS9100 is purpose-built for aviation, space and defense.
- Is AS9100 mandatory?
It is not a legal requirement, but it is effectively mandatory for participation in aerospace supply chains. Primes and OEMs require AS9100 certification to place a supplier on their approved-vendor lists, so a supplier without it cannot access this work.
- What is AS9100 Rev D?
Rev D is the current revision of AS9100, aligned with the modern high-level structure of ISO management-system standards and strengthening requirements around risk-based thinking, product safety and counterfeit-parts prevention. Certification is issued against this current revision.
- What about MRO providers and distributors?
Aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul organisations work to the related AS9110 standard, and distributors of aerospace parts work to AS9120. Both build on the same aerospace quality foundation, and Sterling implements the standard appropriate to your role in the supply chain.
- How long does AS9100 certification take?
A first certification typically takes around four to six months or longer, reflecting the additional rigour of aerospace requirements, the number of processes and your existing quality maturity. A gap assessment provides a firm timeline before you commit.
- Do you provide AS9100 consulting outside Metro Manila?
Yes. Sterling supports aerospace and defense clients across the Philippines — including operations in Clark, Cebu and the economic zones — delivering both on-site and remotely.
- Which certification body issues AS9100?
AS9100 is issued by certification bodies accredited to audit aerospace quality management systems, and certified suppliers are recorded in the aerospace industry’s shared online database, making their status visible to primes and OEMs. Sterling prepares you thoroughly so the certification audit proceeds smoothly, and can guide you in selecting an appropriate accredited body.
- Do we need ISO 9001 first, or can we go straight to AS9100?
You do not need separate ISO 9001 certification first. Because AS9100 contains the full text of ISO 9001, implementing AS9100 builds a complete quality management system that satisfies both. Some organisations choose to hold ISO 9001 as well, particularly if they also serve non-aerospace markets.
- How does AS9100 address counterfeit parts?
Counterfeit and suspect unapproved parts are a serious aerospace risk, and AS9100 includes specific requirements to prevent their use through approved-source controls, verification and inspection. A certified quality system embeds these controls into daily operations, giving customers documented assurance that parts are genuine and traceable.
- Will AS9100 help us win international contracts?
Yes. AS9100 is a globally recognised, uniform benchmark, and holding it is frequently the prerequisite for a Philippine supplier to be considered by international primes, OEMs and their tier-one suppliers. It is one of the clearest ways to demonstrate world-class aerospace quality to overseas customers.
